A Helpful Tip For Consolidating Legends In StyleADVISOR

Jul 8, 2013 Jeremy Poulin

StyleADVISOR has a wide array of formatting features that can be applied to graphs and tables used from the StyleADVISOR gallery. With all the formatting available in StyleADVISOR the user has number of options available to them when designing the layout of their StyleADVISOR report. One thing that we see often in our users reports is multiple graphs being used on a single page, with each referencing its own legend. Often this causes unnecessary redundancy and difficulty reading the entries of each individual legend. This blog article provides a helpful tip of how to format the layout of your StyleADVISOR report to incorporate a single legend that is used to reference all graphs on a single page.

The Layout
The first step to setting up your page to include only a single legend is to create a section for the legend to go. Most will include a section at the bottom of their page to display the legend in, but this area can be anywhere on the page. To create this section in a report the gallery must first be open. The gallery can be opened by going to the View menu and selecting the Gallery option. Now that the gallery is open the “Slice and Dice” feature can be used to cut a section out on the page for the legend.

Removing Unnecessary Legends
After creating an area for the single legend to be placed, the legends for each individual graph must now be removed. This can be accomplished through the right click menu. To turn on the right click editing the “Enable Chart Editing” must first be turned on. This is done by clicking on the Edit menu and selecting “Enable Chart Editing” at the bottom. Once the “Enable Chart Editing” is turned on, the legend for a particular graph can be removed by the following steps below.

1- Right click on the graph
2- Select “Graph” from the menu
3- On the next menu select “Legend”
4- Then on the third menu select “Legend” again
5- In the next dialog window select the “ Location” tab
6- Lastly uncheck the “Visible” box and hit OK

Following these steps, continue to remove the legends from the additional graphs on the page.

Inserting the Single Legend
At this point a single legend needs to be placed into the space that has been sectioned out on the page for all the graphs to reference. Now there is no legend option to pull into the section from the gallery, so a graph with a legend must be pulled in from the gallery to use the legend of. We suggest to our users to use a bar graph as opposed to a line graph, so that the legend displays boxes of color rather than thin lines of color. Below are the steps for removing the three parts from the graph that need to be removed in order to only display the legend.

The Chart Title

1- First ensure “Enable Chart Editing” is turned on under the Edit menu
2- Right click on the graph
3- From the menu select Chart, Title
4- In the next dialog select the Location Tab, uncheck the “Visible” box and hit OK

The Chart Sub-Title

5- Right click on graph
6- From the menu select Chart, Sub-Title
7- In the next dialog select the Location Tab, uncheck the “Visible” box and hit OK

The XY Plot

8- Right click on graph
9- From the menu select Graph, XY Plot, XY Plot
10- In the next dialog select the Location Tab, uncheck the “Visible” box and hit OK

Positioning the Legend
Now that only the legend is being displayed in the designated section, the last course of action is to position the legend in a way that looks the best for your reports layout. There are four available positions, right (default), left, bottom or top. Below are steps for positioning the legend in a way that looks best for your report.

1- First ensure “Enable Chart Editing” is turned on under the Edit menu
2- Right click on the graph
3- From the menu select Graph, Legend, Legend
4- In the next dialog select the Location Tab
5- Within the area labeled “Position” select the button for the preferred position of the legend

By following these steps a legend can be consolidated to one area allowing for a cleaner and easier to read report. As always, any questions related to this blog or Zephyr products can be directed to our support team at (775) 588-0654/ (800) 789-5323 or by e-mail at support@styleadvisor.com.
